Running Gait Analysis

Slow-motion video of how you actually run, plus a head to toe screen of the strength, mobility and control behind it. Every Runner’s MOT starts with a conversation, not an online booking.

Injured or not. Sandbach and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire.

Run by clinicians, not a shop

Your assessment is led by an experienced physiotherapist who treats runners every week, so the findings come with a plan.

Video gait plus a full body screen

We film how you run, then test the strength, mobility and control behind it, because your form is usually a symptom rather than the cause.

A runner’s experience

He came for his running form. He left with a lot more.

We invited Running Through Fatherhood down to Sandbach for a full Runner’s MOT, expecting to talk mostly about cadence and foot strike. Here is what he wrote afterwards.

Turns out it’s not quite that straightforward.

A massive thank you to James and the team at @invicta_health_and_performance for inviting me down for a full Running MOT.

I went in expecting to learn a little bit about my running form.

What I wasn’t expecting was to find out just how much work I need to do away from running.

My flexibility was questionable, my strength definitely needs some attention, and while my running form wasn’t a complete disaster, there are still a few things I can improve.

It was a really eye-opening experience and a reminder that becoming a better runner isn’t just about the miles you do each week.

If you’re serious about improving, staying injury free, or simply understanding your body better, I’d genuinely recommend it.

See what your body is really doing at speed

We film you running from three angles and play it back in slow motion with you, then test the strength, mobility and control behind it. What flashes past in a fraction of a second becomes obvious once you can pause it.

Slow motion · front, side and behind

What we assess in a Runner’s MOT

Video gait analysis

Filmed on the treadmill from the front, side and behind, then played back in slow motion with you so you can see what we see.

Strength and power testing

Objective testing of the calves, quads, hamstrings and glutes, including single-leg work, so we can compare left to right and against what your distance actually demands.

Mobility and flexibility

Ankle, hip and thoracic range of motion, the three that quietly change how you run when they are restricted.

Control and balance

Single-leg control, hopping and landing mechanics. Running is a series of single-leg landings, so this is where a lot of problems start.

Training load and history

Your weekly mileage, sessions, surfaces, goal races and injury history. Most running injuries are a load problem before they are a form problem.

Your findings and plan

A clear summary of what we found and what to do about it, with the priorities in order rather than a list of twenty exercises you will never do.

Gait analysis, or the full Runner’s MOT

Some runners want to see how they run. Others want to know why their body keeps breaking down, or what is left on the table before a goal race. Both start with a conversation, so we can put you in the right one.

FAQ

Running assessment questions

Common questions about running gait analysis and the Runner’s MOT in Sandbach and Holmes Chapel. If something is not covered here, get in touch and we will talk it through.

Gait analysis looks at how you run: we film you on the treadmill from three angles and break the footage down with you in slow motion. The Runner’s MOT includes that, then adds a full body screen of your strength, mobility, control and training load, so we can explain why you run the way you do. Most runners find the answers sit in the MOT rather than in the video alone.

No, and plenty of the runners we see are not. Some come because the same injury keeps returning, others because they have a goal race and want to know what might stop them getting there. Having an assessment while you are fit and running well is the best time to find the gaps, because you have time to do something about them.

Send us an enquiry or call the clinic on 01270 748200. We keep this one off the online booking system on purpose: we want to know your distance, your goal and your history first so we can put you in the right assessment, allow the right amount of time, and pair you with the right clinician. It takes a couple of minutes and it means nobody turns up to the wrong appointment.

A running gait analysis takes around an hour. The full Runner’s MOT is usually around 90 minutes, because the strength, mobility and control testing sits alongside the video work. We will confirm the timing when you enquire, based on what you want to get out of it.

Come in the kit you normally train in, with the trainers you do most of your running in. Shorts are ideal so we can see the knees and hips clearly on video. If you have a second pair of trainers you rotate, bring those too, and if you track your runs on a watch or an app it helps to have that to hand.

Only where there is a good reason to. There is no single perfect running form, and changing technique for the sake of it can create problems rather than solve them. More often the answer is to build the strength, mobility or control that lets your form change on its own. If a specific cue or drill will genuinely help, we will show you it and explain why.

No. A shop assessment is usually a short treadmill clip focused on your feet, with the aim of matching you to a shoe. Ours is carried out by a physiotherapist who assesses the whole body, has no shoes to sell you, and can treat or rehabilitate anything we find. We are happy to talk about footwear, but it is one part of the picture rather than the whole of it.

You leave with a clear picture of what we found and a prioritised plan, so you know what to work on first rather than juggling twenty exercises. If you need ongoing rehab, strength work or treatment we can arrange it, and if you do not, we will tell you that too. Plenty of runners have one MOT, go away and get on with it, then come back before their next block.
